Manduka 71-Inch Black Yoga Mat Reviews

One of the most durable yoga mats available, Manduka's black mat is made from high-performance material designed to endure a lifetime of yoga practice... The mat has a specific top and bottom surface... The top's sticky surface keeps feet firmly rooted during balancing poses, such as Warrior or Downward Facing Dog... The bottom side remains stable on hard floors or carpet, and won't shift or bunch up during movement.

The yoga mat's 1/4-inch thickness provides superior cushioning for the spine, hips, knees, and elbows during restful postures like Child's pose... For safe practicing, the yoga mat's surface remains slip-free even when wet with perspiration... Measuring 71 inches long and 26 inches wide, the mat is long enough for taller yoga practitioners... Though its 6-1/2-pound weight makes it a little heavier than other yoga mats, with more weight, comes noticeably more comfort.

Customer Review: Nice mat, but still gets slippery

This yoga mat is heavy, soft, and appears to be made of very high quality material... However, I have had a lot of difficulty in removing the slippery film... I have used it for approx 20 yoga sessions, I have wiped it down after each session, and I have scrubbed it a few times with a nylon brush, but it is still slippery when wet.

Customer Review: It's a great mat!!

I have been using 2 thinner yoga mats for about 3 years and finally spent the money for a really good mat... I am very happy with this yoga mat... It is thick enough to use alone... It is slippery at first because of a film they put on it, but in a few weeks of use, it works wonderfully... I have no compaints. More Information

Mind Body Bliss Deluxe Yoga Mat Reviewed

The Mind Body Bliss Yoga Mat is thicker than most standard mats to perfectly cushion you in your practice... Measures 24" x 68" x 3/16"... Silk mat bag not included... For a thicker, larger mat, please see the Everything Yoga Ultra Mat.

Customer Review: Great Quality

This is one of the best yoga mats I have ever had... I feel very comfortable and relaxing sitting on the mat... I will not lend the yoga mat to anyone, I love it so much.

Customer Review: Two Sides to Yoga Mats, Know Which is Up

Yoga mats come in three basic thicknesses... At 3/16" this mat is one of the thicker ones designed for those who need or want extra cushion... At 24" x 68" it is the standard width and length... Mats that are about one third as thick as this one (1/16") are good for travel or placing under a thicker mat to provide more traction.

The average mats are about 1/8"... Don't be fooled by the picture above, the beautiful silk bags pictured around each mat DO NOT come with these mats... If you'd like a silk bag you'll have to purchase one separately from a different manufacturer, do an Amazon search for "EverythingYoga Antique Silk Brocade Yoga Mat Bag" and you'll have a choice of four beautiful colors.

There are two sides to this and nearly all yoga mats... Look carefully at the 'bumps' on each side of the mat... The larger bumps are designed to face upwards to cushion your hands, feet, and knees during poses while keeping your body from dangerously slipping out of alignment.

The smaller bumps are designed to face downwards to grip the floor and keep the yoga mat from sliding... Many mats have a label on one end with the name of the brand... This is typically, but not always, located on the 'up' side, the bumps will tell you for sure.

This yoga mat will increase in softness and stickiness with use (so do most mats), they start out mildly sticky and increase in stickiness the more they are used... You will want to wash your mat when it first arrives so as to remove the thin film they get on their surface during the manufacturing process... Instructions for washing the mat are included.

Once you've washed and dried your mat you're ready to begin! After using it for a while, if you find the mat decreasing in stickiness each time you pull it out, this is the typical sign that a light coating of dust or too much body sweat has accumulated on your mat and it needs a light hand washing with very diluted soap and water.

After washing, roll your mat in a thick towel to squeeze out the excess water, otherwise it will take forever to dry in the air... Then, air dry your mat unrolled, inside, and away from sunlight (hanging over the shower bar works nicely).

When you first unroll your mat you will find one end to be a bit curled... Simply alternate the direction you roll your mat (top outside once, then bottom outside next) or the end you start from (curled end once, flat end next time) and you'll find it straightening out more or less over time.

I recommend buying your own yoga mat even if your yoga studio or gym provides them for you... I've worked in many studios and gyms over the years, sometimes management has mats cleaned often, sometimes not... If you bring your own mat you always know where it's been, plus owning your own mat may encourage you to begin valuable practice at home.

For my students who have trouble with their knees in some of the poses requiring the body weight to rest on a knee, I recommend temporarily folding over one end of the mat to get double cushion under the knee while still leaving one layer under the rest of the body... This saves you having to haul more than one mat out each time you practice which can be discouraging especially to the beginner. More Information

Yoga Mat Basics and Different Types of Yoga Mats

Yoga Mats, are they all created equal? Yoga mats are a basic part of every practice... What you might not realize is that there are several types of yoga mats that you can choose from.

Sticky Yoga Mats - These yoga mats offer a covering for your practice area, as well as some stability for you when doing poses... They are thin, lightweight, and come in a variety of colors... Some of them have guide marks on them to illustrate proper hand and foot placements... In order for these mats to be sticky and prevent you from slipping and sliding, you need to sprinkle them with a small amount of water and let them air dry... You can use these mats for most types of yoga.

Ultra Double Thickness Mats - These extra thick yoga mats are basically sticky mats that are ultra thick... They provide both stability and cushioning which is useful in certain poses... They can be a great choice for Astanga practitioners who often jump from one pose to another, I personally love the ultra thick mats because of the extra cushioning they provide... It is the only type I take with me to classes.

Travel Yoga Mats - This type of yoga mat is great to throw in your suitcase or carryon luggage when you are on the go, so you can practice no matter where you are... Travel yoga mats are very thin, you would use one either on a carpeted floor or on top of a towel or blanket on a floor that isn't carpeted.

Cotton Yoga Mats - These yoga mats are excellent for those types of yoga that traditionally cause you to sweat a lot such as Astanga or Bikram, because they absorb sweat, they help keep you from slipping and sliding during these heat-producing practices... They work best when they are sprinkled with a small amount of water, the damp mat gives you a good amount of traction so your hands and feet stay where you place them.

Many of them have lines in the patterns, which can help with your body alignment... Cotton yoga mats also provide cushioning, they can substitute for blankets by helping to bolster your body during certain asanas... Some people use cotton mats over sticky mats during their practice.

Yoga Mat Bag - A yoga mat bag is a great accessory for carrying your yoga mat or mats to class, work, or anywhere else you need to go... Many have extra space where you can put your keys, water bottle, and tee shirt... The bag protects your mat and helps make it easier for you to transport your yoga gear.

Now that you know about the different yoga mats that are available and what each one does, you choose the right mat or mats for you.
